HP Folio 9470m Review: Is It For You?

The HP Folio 9470m is a 14-inch laptop that is easy to handle and feels comfortable in your hand. The lid has three panels, which are held together by a rubberized magnesium hook. Because of this, the lid remains firm despite being open to 140 degrees. The lid is not torsion-resistant, however, and the aluminum surface can bend easily. We suggest carrying the HP Folio 9470m on your lap, which is a more comfortable position.

HP’s Folio 9470m is available in 16 different configurations, each with a different CPU and RAM. The entry-level model comes with a 1.9GHz Intel Core i5-3437U processor and HD Graphics 4000 graphics. Upgraded models have a faster processor, the Core i7-3687U, and 16GB of RAM. The HP Folio 9470m is available with a 128GB SSD or a 256GB SSD.

The HP EliteBook Folio 9470m comes with minimal preloaded software, so you don’t have to worry about being overrun with trial versions of antivirus programs and other freebies. Rather, the HP Folio 9470m relies on the Microsoft Security Essentials package installed by Windows 8. Other than that, it includes WiDi, Softpaq Download Manager, and HP Client Security software.

HP Folio 9470m has a decent screen with a 1366×768-pixel resolution. The display’s brightness, however, varies depending on the battery power used, and this makes it difficult to read in bright outdoor light. The display also exhibits narrow viewing angles and pale colors. The Folio 9470m’s speakers can be strained to the max by the brightness, WLAN, and keyboard illumination, which makes it difficult to see anything clearly.

There are three USB 3.0 ports on the HP EliteBook Folio 9470m. One supports sleep and charge, while the other two are side-by-side on the right edge of the tablet. The left edge of HP Folio 9470m houses a microphone/headphone combo jack, the power connector, and the SmartCard reader. The battery can be removed for use when you are not in a position to attach a USB cable.

The trackpad on the HP EliteBook Folio 9470m is responsive and smooth to touch. The HP Pavilion 11 trackpad also features built-in scroll bars and zooming. Despite HP Folio 9470m’s lack of a dedicated optical drive, it still has physical buttons that are much easier to use than the ones built into the trackpad. Additionally, the second set of buttons on the HP EliteBook Folio 9470m is a pointing stick. The pointing stick has a large, concave surface and is stippled for added comfort.

The HP Folio 9470m uses third-generation Intel Core processors. This processor provides business-grade security, control, and remote manageability. Its wide range of configuration options and security features make the HP EliteBook Folio a great choice for both work and play. The HP EliteBook Folio 9470m also comes with a smart card reader and credential manager. A fingerprint sensor is also built-in.
